Billy was always persuasive.
This was no exception. Doc had gone upstairs and changed into clothes that would be more suitable for riding around in the half-darkness and cold and then rejoined Billy downstairs, and took his coffee with him as they crunched along the dirty layer of snow towards the stables.
It was quiet. Almost a familiar quiet.
New Mexico was quiet too.
"So how far's the place where we can hole up for a bit 'fore Garrett comes near again," Doc asks, as they enter the stables through the smaller side door and head for the stall with their horses.
He was already smiling though. Maybe it was the prospect of doing something he was used to with a pal for a change.

"Not far. At the bottom of the canyon in a wash. It'll take Garrett an his men a while to find a way down, they won't be usin our route after all, an won't risk ridin the steep trails in the dark."

no subject
"Yeah. We'll be somewhere we can get more then a nights rest soon enough."

"Lead on, Mr. Bonney."

"You know what this place needs Doc?" He asks as the horses plod along. "Sandstone. This place is pretty an all, but there's just somethin bout sandstone rocks that really catches the eye. Color of em, way they hold the light. There ought to be some here."

Doc chirps quietly to his horse to guide them off the path and after Billy. "Ain't nothin' like an open sky...feels like the walls are closin' in."

"Hey, Doc. I'll race ya!" Done with talking for the moment Billy switches quickly to action without missing a beat.

Some things will never change.
"I know these woods better," he calls, glad for the fullish moon to light the way.

He steers the horse through the trees with unerring skill. Tearing up mud and snow and dodging any low branches.

He doesn't really have a destination in mind, just plans to keep going until he decides he's won.

There's a hill and the trees are tall, but Doc laughs as they charge upwards, zigzagging through the trunks.

Boys being boys.

Something moves in the distance in the trees and Doc thinks he sees red eyes...

His horse seems to notice and let's out a nervous whicker.

"Y'got two guns...y'can shoot twice as many of the furry things."

Billy is all about playing fair.

"Alright," Doc nods and then quickly loads five rounds into the weapon and clicks the cylinder shut, before he rides off at the rabbits.
