OOM : Doc's room at Milliways

[scurlock]

After Will asks Bar for help explaining his home to Doc and getting the note and food from the Bar, Doc and Will head upstairs to room 25.

Doc's room isn't really that big, with a bed up against one wall and a small table beside it, stacked with a few dog-eared books, topics spanning from poetry, swordfighting, more poetry, and a book of plays.

There is a dresser with a mirror leaning against the wall, and on it are two small folded paper cranes that he took off the bar one day when there were so many, a brown one and a pink one, as well as a thin tin box for his cigarettes, and the stockline record, leather bound sits next to it as well. A corner of the room has several crates that Will will recognize as the bits of wreckage and bottles of rum from the Pearl stacked up neatly. There's a chair by the wall as well and an oil lamp, a pair of eyeglasses sitting next to another small stack of books, but what makes Doc stop and stare is the strange, flat...thing that is now on a small stand against the far wall.

(It's a plasma TV. He has no idea what a plasma TV is, or what that strange thing with the buttons on it is either. All he knows is that he's carrying another strange metal box in his hands and a smaller, more flexible plastic box, and a note from Bar with instructions of a sort. Will, is carrying a pizza and a helpfully packaged six-pack of beer.)

"Well that wasn't there before."

"Only certain colors," he makes note in his head. "No purple and no blue."

Doc eyes the pizza and then wanders over to grab a slice, jumping when the movie starts playing the opening scene.

"Lady Bar'll know the right thing, did for Molly."

Will's found a place to sit and the pizza is still warm as the credits start, this is all very odd.

There's the scene of a battlefield, with people in the noble colors and armor attacking others, with swords and such, it's a very big fight and he stops the pizza hunting to watch.

"S'like...huh."

[will_scarlett]

As the battle starts Will watches more and gets rather more serious,

"Nay, na terribly like, battles are ne'er that clean an a knight would ne'er both with fightin' just a regular soldier, only care 'bout takin' each other on."

[scurlock]

"Seems like one side's a lot better than the other."

That would be the knight's side. Not the peasants. Then he points at the very important looking guy on the screen.

"He a knight...or a king? Cause he's got a crown on."

[will_scarlett]

"Must be a King, peasants ne'er stand a chance in a fair battle with knights. Tis why we 'ave to trick 'em, get 'em into Sherwood."

Will's going to take a long drink of beer now.

[scurlock]

Doc nods and settles back a little, and then settles on the bed with a piece of pizza and a beer.

The dramatic music signals something important...and that would be the King getting killed. He arches an eyebrow mid bite.

[will_scarlett]

Kings getting killed on battlefields aren't that odd so Will just eats some more and then there's a dragon on the screen,

"We dinna 'ave those."

[scurlock]

Doc blinks.

"I fargin' hope not. Look at the size of...wow."

[will_scarlett]

"Only in stories, but na real. Aye, bloody 'ell look at that fire."

[scurlock]

Doc's just staring, and chewing his bite of pizza.

"Mama used t'tell stories about knights slaying dragons to save princesses."

[will_scarlett]

"Well, aye tis stories, but most knights are just men with noble blood an land. Far too many o''em think, that power means can do whate'er they like."

[scurlock]

"So your time is very ruled by power and who owns the land."

He takes another drink and watches as the time shifts and then the new king is forcing people to build him a castle.

[will_scarlett]

"Aye, 'xactly, most land is 'eld by family line granted by the King most like. Church owns the rest o'the land."

[scurlock]

"S'different from our church. Government owns most everything."

[will_scarlett]

"Kings an bishops are always workin' together. Pope wants to get power just as much as any king."

[scurlock]

"Interestin'," he comments, as he watches as the time seems to shift again...and everyone is older. The date as well has changed by the text on the bottom of the screen which he reads out loud.

[will_scarlett]

Now following one of the knights who's trying to make a living off since the king doesn't like him anymore,

"Seems fairly true, but tis rare to see a Knight without more to 'is name."

[scurlock]

"Most of 'em are well off no matter what?"

Lucky bastards.

[will_scarlett]

"Oh aye, most knights are eldest sons so got their father's land an titles. Younger sons usually 'ave to become clerks or go into the Church."

[scurlock]

"What's it take to become a knight?" Doc reaches for another slice of pizza.

[will_scarlett]

Will grabs another piece too as he drinks some more beer,

"'ave to 'ave money an land since knights own their own 'orses, usually 'ave at least two squires. Tis the first step in bein' a noble, since get made a knight though can inherit other titles like bein' a Lord or Earl."

[scurlock]

"And there's no way to buy land if you've got the money and you ain't somebody up high? That don't make no sense...how're you supposed to move up?"

The screen is suddenly loud as the dragon swoops and roars.

[will_scarlett]

Will jumps back at that almost spilling his beer,

"Ye're na, can move up if ye're in the Church, 'rhaps or the King can give ye more land but canna truly buy that much. If ye've a trade or such, tis easier but then 'ave to 'ave the money or know a master for an 'pprenticeship."

[scurlock]

"So what is it that you and your family does?" He's curious...and sad that Will can't get out of the situation he's in.
